Italian Media Report: Klopp to Return as Roma Head Coach After One Year, 73-Year-Old Ranieri to Serve as Senior Advisor

The battle for fourth place in the 2024-25 Serie A season remains intense, with Roma still hopeful of securing a Champions League spot. On May 20, Italy’s La Nazione reported that Roma has reached an agreement with renowned coach Jürgen Klopp, marking his return to coaching after a year-long hiatus, sparking great excitement among fans.

One year ago, Klopp parted ways with Liverpool and took a six-month break before assuming the role of Global Sporting Director at Red Bull Football Group. However, the 57-year-old coach is eager to return to the pitch, unleashing his passion for coaching and pursuing victories and honors. Previously, Klopp was linked with Real Madrid, but that did not materialize. This time, he has chosen to take on a new challenge with the Serie A heavyweight Roma.

The report states that current head coach 73-year-old Claudio Ranieri will step down at the end of this season and transition to a senior advisor role, assisting Klopp in the club’s rebuilding process. Since taking over in November last year, Ranieri has led Roma to a strong recovery, currently ranking fifth and just one point shy of the Champions League spots.

Klopp has already proven himself as a top-level coach during his time at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, where in nine years he won eight major trophies including the Premier League and Champions League. Notably, in the 2019-20 season, he led Liverpool to their first-ever Premier League title, ending a 30-year wait for a top-flight championship.

For Roma, a club with certain strengths but in need of rebuilding, Klopp’s coaching style and experience are a perfect fit. With a 98-year history and three Serie A titles, Roma has recently been overshadowed by Juventus and Inter Milan and is at a critical juncture requiring revitalization. Klopp’s arrival will undoubtedly inject strong momentum into Roma, raising high expectations for the team’s future.
