ElonMusk Confirms: Tesla to Launch Robotaxi Service in Austin by End of June, Starting with 10 Vehicles

Tesla is officially taking its Robotaxi vision to the streets. CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla will launch its autonomous taxi service in Austin, Texas, by the end of June, beginning with a pilot fleet of around 10 vehicles. If the trial runs smoothly and no accidents occur, Tesla plans to scale the fleet to thousands of vehicles rapidly.

Musk emphasized that the service will not cover all of Austin, but will operate only within geofenced, high-safety areas. Following Austin, Tesla aims to expand Robotaxi operations to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Technology: FSD “Unsupervised” and Model Y Power the Rollout

The upcoming Robotaxi fleet will be based on the Model Y, equipped with a new version of Tesla's Full Self-Driving system: FSD Unsupervised.
This version will operate without a safety driver in the vehicle. Instead, Tesla employees will monitor the fleet remotelyto ensure operational safety.

Musk made a bold prediction: By the end of 2026, there will be hundreds of thousands—or even millions—of fully autonomous Teslas on U.S. roads.

According to Goldman Sachs Research, by 2030Level 3 (L3) autonomous vehicles will account for 10% of global new car sales. By 2040, L3 and higher-level autonomous cars could represent up to 60% of light vehicle sales.
China is projected to lead the world, with 90% of vehicles sold being L3 or above by that time.

However, experts caution that full maturity of the technology will take time.
Dr. Zhao Liang, Dean of Computer Science at Shenyang Aerospace University, points out that current challenges include navigating complex road environments, maintaining performance in extreme weather, and accurately predicting human behavior. Mass adoption in China may take another 10 to 15 years.
