Farewell to a French Tennis Icon: Former World No. 4 Caroline Garcia Announces Retirement, Roland Garros to Be Her Final Bow
On May 23, 2025, French tennis star Caroline Garcia announced her retirement via social media, stating that the upcoming French Open (Roland-Garros) will be her final appearance at a Grand Slam event.
In an emotional message, Garcia wrote: “It’s time to say goodbye. After 15 years on tour and dedicating 25 years of my life to tennis, I feel ready to start a new chapter.”
Garcia added that she would still compete in several more tournaments after the French Open to properly close out her career. “Right now, I just want to give my all and enjoy my last few weeks as a professional athlete.”
As a leading figure in French women’s tennis in recent years, Garcia reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 4 in 2018 and won 11 WTA singles titles. Notably, in 2017 she achieved back-to-back WTA 1000 titles in Beijing and Wuhan, becoming one of the season’s standout players.
Her best Grand Slam performance came at the 2022 US Open, where she reached the semifinals. That same year, she won the WTA Finals, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the final—her most significant singles title.
Garcia also excelled in doubles, achieving a career-high ranking of No. 2. Alongside Kristina Mladenovic, she won the French Open women’s doubles titles in 2016 and 2022, and helped France win the 2019 Fed Cup (now Billie Jean King Cup).
Though only 31, Garcia faced a tough year due to physical injuries and mental health struggles. Despite returning to competition earlier this season, she has yet to recapture her top form and is currently ranked 145th in the world.
Content Analysis:
Garcia’s retirement marks the close of a resilient and inspiring career in women’s tennis, both in France and globally. Known for her solid baseline play and mental toughness, her journey underscores the immense physical and psychological demands of professional tennis. Her choice to bid farewell on home soil is both a tribute to her legacy and a pursuit of peace in the next phase of her life.
