Amazon Commits A$20 Billion to Build AI Data Centers and Green Energy in Australia — A New Chapter in the Global Compute Race
Amid the global surge in AI innovation, Amazon has made one of its boldest moves yet. The tech giant recently announced a massive A$20 billion (approx. US$13.3 billion) investment between 2025 and 2029 to expand data center infrastructure in Australia. This marks the largest public tech investment in the country’s history and signals Amazon’s accelerating strategy in the southern hemisphere’s AI landscape.
The investment will be directed toward scaling server capacity, upgrading operations, and significantly enhancing AI computing power — directly aligned with the Australian government’s national strategy to integrate AI across the economy. Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman emphasized: “AI is a once-in-a-generation transformation, and we’re here to help Australian enterprises harness its full potential.”
Notably, Amazon also unveiled a green energy plan alongside the data center expansion, committing to build three new solar power plants in Victoria and Queensland. These plants are expected to add over 170 megawatts of clean energy capacity, ensuring sustainable power for its facilities and strengthening Amazon’s long-term renewable strategy.
This move surpasses even Amazon’s £8 billion data center expansion in the UK last year, further underlining Australia’s strategic role in the Asia-Pacific AI infrastructure race. As cloud giants scale up their presence, Amazon’s forward-looking investment may trigger a new wave in the global data center arms race.
With AI models growing in size and complexity, the pressure on compute and energy infrastructure is intensifying. Amazon’s twin-track investment — in compute and sustainability — aims to set a new benchmark for responsible AI infrastructure in the decade ahead.
