Tencent Denies $15 Billion Nexon Acquisition Rumor, Signals Strategic Shift Toward AI
Tencent has swiftly denied media reports suggesting it was considering a $15 billion acquisition of South Korean gaming giant Nexon. According to Bloomberg, Tencent was allegedly exploring a deal with Nexon's founding family, who hold a nearly 48.42% stake through NXC. However, a source close to Tencent clarified on June 13 that "Tencent has not contacted Nexon’s founding family and is not considering any acquisition."
The speculation gained traction due to Tencent and Nexon's long-standing partnership. Since 2008, Tencent has operated Nexon’s flagship title Dungeon & Fighter in mainland China, with the game contributing 5–10% of Tencent’s annual gaming revenue. In 2022, both companies expanded their collaboration with the launch of the virtual platform NEXONTOWN, built on Tencent Cloud.
Nevertheless, Nexon's shareholder structure—featuring Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund holding 10.51%—presents significant hurdles to any potential acquisition. Any major ownership change would invite regulatory scrutiny and possibly disrupt existing alliances.
Industry analysts suggest Tencent’s prompt denial reflects a broader strategic pivot. In recent years, the tech giant has shifted focus to AI infrastructure, large models, and cloud services, moving away from massive gaming acquisitions. With cross-border M&A facing increased global oversight, Tencent appears to be steering clear of regulatory entanglements.
While the Nexon rumor was quickly quashed, it underlines how capital markets remain highly sensitive to any signal of industry consolidation. Nexon has yet to comment, and South Korean financial regulators have not launched any formal investigation. Still, the episode reveals just how closely the gaming world watches every strategic move between leading platforms.
