Stunning Upset! Botafogo Beats PSG 1-0 for Second Straight Win, Tops Club World Cup Group
In a surprising twist in Group B of the Club World Cup, Brazilian side Botafogo edged out reigning Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain with a 1-0 victory. Despite dominating possession and creating multiple chances, PSG failed to convert and suffered their first loss of the tournament. Botafogo, now with 6 points from two wins, leads the group but has yet to secure a knockout stage spot.
Club World Cup Shock: PSG Falls to Botafogo as Group Lead Shifts
On June 20, Paris Saint-Germain faced Botafogo in their second Group B match at the Club World Cup. After a 4-0 demolition of Atlético Madrid in their opener, PSG entered as heavy favorites. However, a defensive lapse and toothless attack saw them slip to a narrow 0-1 defeat.
PSG Dominates but Fails to Score
The Parisians controlled the tempo early, holding 88% possession in the first 10 minutes. Doué and Kvaratskhelia continuously threatened from the wings, but Botafogo’s defense remained resilient. In the 36th minute, a PSG turnover led to a fast counterattack, and Igor Jesus’s shot deflected off Pacho into the net—Botafogo took the lead with their only real chance of the half.
Second-Half Surge Falls Short
PSG made aggressive substitutions in the second half, bringing on Mendes, Barcola, and João Neves. Despite sustained pressure and a disallowed goal in the 78th minute for offside, PSG couldn’t find the equalizer. A late free-kick from Kvaratskhelia sailed over the crossbar, and Botafogo held on for a historic win.
Botafogo’s Big Moment, PSG Faces Group Stage Pressure
With two consecutive wins, Botafogo now leads Group B with 6 points and becomes the tournament’s first team to reach that mark. Though not mathematically qualified yet, they’re well on course for the knockout round. PSG, meanwhile, must regroup quickly if they hope to stay in the title race.
