U.S. Airstrikes on Iranian Nuclear Facilities Show Initial Results? Pentagon Claims Iran's Nuclear Program Delayed by Up to Two Years

The U.S. Department of Defense announced on July 2 (local time) that its recent military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities have begun to yield results. According to the latest assessment, the precision airstrikes carried out last month on three key nuclear targets in Iran have effectively delayed Tehran’s nuclear program by up to two years.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated at a press briefing that the targeted facilities were "completely destroyed," significantly impairing Iran’s nuclear development capabilities. He reiterated former President Trump’s earlier claim: “We believe Iran’s nuclear program has been delayed by one to two years, possibly closer to two.”

However, this assessment was indirectly questioned by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi recently remarked that despite the attacks, Iran’s uranium enrichment capacity has not been entirely lost and could potentially resume within months. He emphasized, “The Iranian nuclear issue cannot be resolved solely through military means.”

Further escalating the situation, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on July 2 approved a suspension of cooperation with the IAEA. Analysts suggest this decision will make it even harder for Western powers to monitor the progress of Iran’s nuclear activities.

The backdrop to this crisis began on June 13, when Israel launched a large-scale airstrike on Iran. Iran responded by closing its airspace and launching missile and drone counterattacks. The U.S. followed with its June 21 strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, prompting a retaliatory missile attack by Iran on the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on June 23. A temporary ceasefire between Israel and Iran was reached on June 24.

Although tensions in the Middle East nuclear crisis have somewhat eased, regional security remains fragile, and the future of Iran’s nuclear ambitions is still uncertain.
