Losses Exceed $2.7 Billion RMB, Dual Market Cold Shoulder! The Biggest Hollywood Box Office Flop of Summer 2025 Emerges as US and China Audiences “Collectively Reject”

2025 Summer Hollywood: Mixed Fortunes as Domestic Films Falter and Hollywood Blockbusters Show Divided Performance
This summer, Hollywood films in China’s mainland market presented a mixed picture—some bright spots, some disappointments. In recent years, Hollywood films have frequently been overshadowed by domestic productions, especially since Avatar 2, with hardly any Hollywood film surpassing 1 billion RMB at the mainland box office. However, this summer has seen a shift — Mission Impossible 8 took the crown unexpectedly, while Jurassic World: Dominion is gearing up to be a major contender.
In contrast, domestic films showed weak overall performance. Titles like Sauce Garden Mystery disappointed with only 330 million RMB, while Very Deal starring Xiao Shenyang flopped spectacularly with just 103,000 RMB, and Breakup List by director Tian Yusheng didn’t even reach 70 million RMB, showing the continued difficulty for domestic films to produce strong summer blockbusters.
Hollywood’s Surprise Hits: Mission Impossible 8 Leads with Strong Reviews and Box Office
Against skepticism, Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible 8 surpassed 455 million RMB at the mainland box office, temporarily claiming the summer crown. The animated film New How to Train Your Dragon also performed well, grossing 231 million RMB. With domestic films losing favor, Hollywood’s formulaic popcorn films have gained renewed audience support.
Upcoming blockbusters like Superman, Jurassic World: Dominion, and Fantastic Four are set to release soon. Especially Jurassic World: Dominion, with its previous three films each topping 1 billion RMB in China, has ramped up its promotion efforts. Given its competitors in comedy genres, it is likely to rejoin the billion RMB club and become a major summer hit.
Worst Animated Blockbuster in History? Pixar’s Earth Agent Faces Market Cold Shoulder
However, Hollywood hasn’t escaped box office failures. Earth Agent has become one of the biggest box office disasters of the summer and possibly the year. As Pixar’s big-budget animation, with a production cost of $300 million USD, it faced multiple director changes and production delays, originally expected to be a blockbuster.
However, it grossed only $41.95 million USD in North America and a mere 20.57 million RMB in just 5 days in China, with forecasts suggesting the final mainland gross will not exceed 40 million RMB. Its global gross stands at just $78.14 million USD, far below breakeven. The estimated loss is about $270 million USD (approx. 2.7 billion RMB), equivalent to the cost of producing two The Wandering Earth 2 films.
This marks a heavy blow to Pixar’s animation legacy and signals a warning for Hollywood’s animation market strategies.
Summary: Hollywood’s Struggle to Reignite Mainland Market, Eyes on Avatar 3 to Restart Glory
Overall, the 2025 summer Hollywood blockbusters show a stark divide in mainland China: with surprise hits like Mission Impossible 8 but also major flops like Earth Agent. Domestic films still lack strong summer blockbusters, while Hollywood’s partial recovery still falls short of its peak.
With Hollywood gradually adjusting strategies by toning down sensitive content and re-focusing on the Chinese market, Avatar 3 at the end of 2025 may become a critical turning point worth watching closely.
