Surprise Turn: Vinícius Jr Pauses Contract Talks, Eyes Free Transfer Like Mbappé

Vinícius Jr has unexpectedly paused his contract renewal talks with Real Madrid, despite previously reaching a verbal agreement. According to sources including The Athletic, the Brazilian forward may now consider leaving on a free transfer in 2027, citing salary disagreements, a lack of trust from coach Xabi Alonso, and a perceived drop in his status within the team.

Vinícius Jr’s contract renewal negotiations with Real Madrid have come to a sudden halt. Although a new deal was reportedly close, reliable media outlets now confirm that the Brazilian has backtracked and will not resume discussions before the new season begins.

Sources say Vinícius is seeking an annual salary of €30 million, a figure Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has refused. The forward’s decision is reportedly driven by three factors: limited trust from new coach Xabi Alonso, dissatisfaction with the club’s recent attitude towards him, and growing concern over his diminishing role as a central figure in the team.

Although his current contract runs until 2027, should he decline to extend next summer, he would enter the final year of his deal—free to negotiate with other clubs, potentially securing a lucrative signing bonus similar to Kylian Mbappé.

Journalist Rubén Martín of AS notes that Madrid’s hesitation is partially due to concerns over Vinícius’s performance this past season. Meanwhile, Relevo's Mario Picón reports that all talks are effectively frozen for now, with any further developments likely to wait until after the season starts.
