Kai Langer, Former BMW i Series Design Director, Joins Xiaomi to Accelerate EV Expansion

Kai Langer, the former design head of BMW's i Series, has officially joined Chinese tech giant Xiaomi on August 1, after over 20 years with BMW Group. His move marks another strategic push by Xiaomi to strengthen its smart electric vehicle (EV) business.

In a LinkedIn post, Langer described Xiaomi as “one of the most progressive and fast-rising tech companies in the world,” praising its strong foundation in consumer electronics and bold entry into the automotive sector. He expressed excitement to help shape the future of mobility as part of Xiaomi’s journey.

🧑‍🎨 A Veteran with 20+ Years of BMW Design Experience

Langer joined BMW in 2003 and held various design roles throughout his career. According to a 2021 BMW press release, he led the design team for the BMW i Series, including the iconic i3 and i8. He was involved from the early conceptual phase and played a crucial role in launching the BMW i3 in 2013 — a milestone in urban electric vehicle design.
