In the early hours of August 14 (Beijing time), the 2025-26 European football season officially kicked off, with the UEFA Super Cup as the curtain-raiser. UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain faced UEFA Europa League champions Tottenham Hotspur.
Before the match, PSG’s total squad value stood at an astonishing €1.2 billion, but goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was left out of the squad due to a complete breakdown in relations, and his transfer countdown has begun. Spurs, valued at €830 million, saw their long-serving captain Son Heung-min depart for MLS in the summer, and Ange Postecoglou was replaced by new head coach Frank.
Spurs Take Control, Dominate the First Half
Right from the start, Spurs played aggressively, recording two shots in the opening five minutes. PSG’s first attack was fluid but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s turn-and-shot missed the target.
In the 22nd minute, Richarlison stole the ball from Ousmane Dembélé to launch a counter, nearly scoring. In the 39th minute, Spurs unleashed a flurry of attacks—João Palhinha’s shot hit the crossbar, but Micky van de Ven pounced on the rebound to make it 1-0. Just before halftime, Mohammed Kudus’ close-range header hit the post, with Spurs leading 9-4 in shots.
PSG Trail by Two, Struggle to Respond
Only three minutes into the second half, PSG’s backline left Cristian Romero unmarked from Pedro Porro’s free-kick, and his header doubled Spurs’ lead to 2-0.
In the 68th minute, Bartra scored for PSG, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Despite multiple substitutions from Luis Enrique, PSG remained on the back foot, while Spurs fans sang joyfully from the stands.
Lee Kang-in Sparks the Comeback
In the 85th minute, substitute Lee Kang-in fired a powerful shot from outside the box to pull one back for PSG. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Achraf Hakimi initiated an attack, Dembélé crossed into the box, and Gonçalo Ramos rose high to head home the equalizer, making it 2-2.
Penalty Shootout Drama
As per UEFA Super Cup rules, the match went straight to penalties. Spurs initially took the lead, but Timo Werner missed in the fourth round, allowing PSG to take control. The French side scored all of their final four penalties to secure a 4-3 shootout win, completing a 6-5 overall victory and lifting their first trophy of the new season.
This match not only demonstrated PSG’s resilience but also delivered a thrilling opening to the European football season.
