Tesla Model Y L Launches at ¥339,000: Bigger Space, But Is the Third Row Really a Selling Point?

On the morning of August 19, Tesla officially announced the launch of the Model Y L in China, priced at ¥339,000 — about ¥25,500 higher than the top version of the current Model Y. The new model features dual-motor all-wheel drive, slightly more power, and a larger body size, with the key change being the addition of a third row of seats.
At Tesla’s store in Guangzhou’s Tianhuan Plaza, the Model Y L drew crowds. Visitors included young customers, families, EV enthusiasts, and even existing Tesla owners curious to compare. While many admired the brand appeal, not all were convinced by the new third-row design.
A current Model Y owner said he had no need for a third row, preferring cargo space and driving agility. He argued that the Model Y L is essentially a branch of the same lineup, with little difference in infotainment or performance, but potentially worse handling due to the extended body.
Compared to domestic rivals, Tesla still lags in comfort features. Competitors like the Li Auto i8 (“fridge, TV, and sofa”) or the LeDao L90 (spacious interior under ¥300,000) appear more practical. But for some buyers, Tesla’s brand and emotional value outweigh additional configurations — owning a Tesla itself signals status.
The Third Row Experience
- Second Row: Independent seats with ventilation and heating, improved legroom thanks to a longer wheelbase.
- Third Row: Mixed reviews — acceptable legroom but low seat height leaves thighs suspended, headroom is cramped under the sloping glass, and there are concerns about sun exposure and heat due to limited UV protection. Cargo space also shrinks drastically when all three rows are used, barely fitting a few backpacks.
One visitor joked: “Sitting in the third row feels like riding in a convertible.”
Market Outlook
Tesla Model Y L’s third row is more of a marketing highlight than a true comfort solution. It caters to Tesla fans who demand more space, but for most families comparing practicality, domestic brands may still be the first choice.
In the short term, the new model will boost Tesla’s sales and attention in China. But whether it can maintain competitiveness against high-value Chinese EVs remains uncertain.
Conclusion: The Model Y L expands Tesla’s lineup, but its third row is a compromise. The brand’s emotional pull may drive sales initially, yet in the long run, practicality will determine its success.
