On September 5, BMW officially announced its brand-new all-electric crossover — the iX3.
Even before its official debut, the car has already ignited heated discussions across the internet — all thanks to its bold and unconventional front-end design.
Some netizens didn’t hold back:
- “It’s not just ugly, it’s on another level.”
- “Those nostrils… I have no words.”
- “Looks like bad aesthetics have now spread to the auto industry.”
Many even dug up memes, claiming the new face looked strangely familiar.
But not everyone was critical. Others praised BMW’s daring approach:
- “Unique personality — I love it.”
- “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I think it’s good-looking.”
- “Unmatched recognition factor.”
Regardless of which camp you’re in, one thing’s certain — the iX3 is making waves before it’s even on the road.
A Nod to the Past, Built for the Future
BMW says the controversial front design pays homage to the 1960s Neue Klasse models. More than just a tribute, this is also the first mass-produced model based on the all-new Neue Klasse platform, carrying forward the Vision Neue Klasse X concept car’s design DNA.
Expect sleek flush door handles, classic-style side mirrors, full-width tail lights, and bumper edges that keep a touch of sportiness — all wrapped in a flowing, concept-inspired silhouette.
Bigger, Roomier, Smarter
Measuring 4,780mm long, 1,895mm wide, and 1,635mm tall with a 2,895mm wheelbase, the new iX3 offers more space than ever.
Inside, the showstopper is the world’s first panoramic iDrive Horizon Display System — a cutting-edge projection tech that casts a massive 40-inch, 4K AR interface onto the windshield with a jaw-dropping 100,000:1 contrast ratio. Even with polarized sunglasses on, drivers can clearly see navigation, speed, and driver-assistance data.
Power, Range, and Rapid Charging
The iX3 will debut in the 50 xDrive variant, pairing a front asynchronous motor with a rear-excited synchronous motor for an advanced AWD setup.
Range is a headline feature:
- EPA: 644 km
- WLTP: 800 km
- China Long-Wheelbase CLTC: Over 900 km
Charging is just as impressive — with 6th-gen cylindrical battery cells enabling a 350 km range boost in just 10 minutes.
BMW also revealed a deeper focus on China, integrating leading AI large language model technology and optimizing tuning for local road conditions.
The Competitive Reality
While these numbers are impressive, the real challenge lies ahead. China’s EV landscape is dominated by tech-driven powerhouses like Huawei, Xiaomi, and NIO — brands that excel not just in performance, but in smart, connected experiences. By 2026, when the iX3 enters mass production, domestic EVs may have an even stronger edge in both technology and pricing.
Still, with its 900 km range, lightning-fast charging, and next-gen AR driving display, BMW is sending a clear signal: traditional luxury marques aren’t backing down — they’re ready to fight back.
