Manchester United Weighs Bringing Back De Gea to Mentor Rising Star Lamins – Amorim a Big Admirer
Even after the Premier League summer transfer window closed, Manchester United managed to offload Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana. Now, the battle for the No.1 spot is set between Turkish international Altay Bayındır and new signing Senne Lammens.
The 23-year-old Belgian shot-stopper is still adapting to English football, having been sidelined for two consecutive matches by Royal Antwerp before his £18.2 million move to Old Trafford. Many believe Bayındır may continue to start, given Lammens’ limited Premier League experience.
However, not everyone is convinced Bayındır should remain first-choice. Club legend Gary Neville has raised concerns, and former Chelsea player Craig Burley echoed those doubts—particularly highlighting Bayındır’s vulnerability when defending set pieces.
“Manchester United can’t let Bayındır start,” Burley stressed. “He may be good at shot-stopping, which is a goalkeeper’s core job, but he offers nothing when it comes to dealing with set pieces. You need a keeper who can organize the back line, command the box, and be authoritative—especially in dead-ball situations. Every team facing United will target this weakness, pumping balls into the box to challenge the keeper. You either face it with courage or get overwhelmed. We still don’t know how Lammens will respond.”
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano revealed that United see Lammens as a potential future star and a truly top-class goalkeeper. For now, he will have to prove himself by competing directly with Bayındır for the starting role.
According to English media reports, some within United’s management have even suggested a sensational return for 34-year-old club legend David De Gea. While an immediate move in the January window is unlikely, a reunion could be on the table once veteran Tom Heaton, nearing 40, decides to retire.
De Gea, now playing for Fiorentina, returned to Old Trafford in the summer for a pre-season friendly, receiving a rapturous welcome from the “Theatre of Dreams” faithful. Speaking to fans, he hinted:
“Our paths might cross again in the future.”
In an interview with Sky Sports, De Gea expressed his hopes for United:
“I know the club has faced challenges in recent years, but Manchester United is still one of the best clubs in the world. With strong signings and the manager’s first full season, I hope they can achieve great things. Let’s wait and see—I wish them the success they deserve.”
Manager Rúben Amorim is reportedly an admirer of De Gea and believes his experience could help develop both Lammens and Bayındır. During the friendly, the 40-year-old Portuguese tactician greeted De Gea with a warm embrace. Unlike some modern managers, Amorim does not demand that his goalkeepers be heavily involved in possession play, preferring them to focus on their core defensive responsibilities.
Interestingly, Lammens recently admitted that while he respects De Gea, his personal idols are Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtois.
“I grew up watching a lot of football, and when I became a goalkeeper, my inspiration came from Neuer and Courtois. They share similar traits with me, and I really admire them.”
Describing his own style, Lammens said:
“I’m quite an all-rounder and proud of it. I enjoy building play from the back, working with teammates, and controlling the space behind the defence. Of course, to be a top goalkeeper at this level, you must first excel at your primary job—keeping the ball out of the net. I see myself as a complete goalkeeper, but I know I can still improve, and I can’t wait to get started in training.”
