September 10 – According to Blue Whale Finance, shortly after the launch of the iPhone 17 series, rumors began circulating within the industry that Apple was forcing its supply chain partners to implement robotic automation — or risk losing new contracts.
Blue Whale Finance reached out to three of Apple’s leading contract manufacturers in China, and all firmly stated: “We have never heard of such a requirement.” An insider from one top-tier manufacturer added that while major players are already highly advanced in automation, the electronics assembly sector has long been labor-intensive. Automation, they explained, is typically applied to well-established production processes, but certain stages still rely on manual labor.
Earlier this month, DigiTimes reported that Apple is accelerating the automation transformation of its supply chain, allegedly making “possession of robotic automation technology” a prerequisite for securing manufacturing contracts. The strategy, sources said, is aimed at reducing dependency on human labor, ensuring consistent product quality across different factories, and, as Apple diversifies its supply chain, driving down long-term production costs.
