Chinese Super League Club Tables Stunning Offer for Brazilian Striker Worth \$330 Million – Winter Window’s Biggest Foreign Signing Looms

Since the end of the “golden era” of big-money signings, Chinese Super League (CSL) clubs have dramatically reduced their transfer spending, with blockbuster deals becoming a thing of the past. According to Brazilian media, a CSL club has made contact with Riyadh-based powerhouse Al Hilal and Brazilian striker Marcos Leonardo, putting a formal offer on the table. If the move goes through, it would mark the most high-profile CSL signing in nearly five years.

The revelation came from Julio Casares, president of Brazilian giants São Paulo, who had recently tried—and failed—to sign Leonardo. In an interview, Casares explained that their negotiations collapsed because other clubs, including one from China, stepped in with strong bids.

“We were competing with both Arab and Chinese clubs for Leonardo,” Casares said. “Unfortunately, news of our talks leaked early, and everyone soon knew Al Hilal was willing to loan him to us for free. That gave our rivals the chance to present paid offers directly to Al Hilal. At that point, would they still agree to let him go for nothing? Obviously not. The premature leak dealt a fatal blow to our chances.”

While Casares didn’t name the CSL club involved, it’s clear they are serious—having already submitted a concrete offer. Marcos Leonardo, 22, stands 1.77m tall and plays as a forward. Once considered one of the most promising attacking talents in Brazil’s Série A and Portugal’s Primeira Liga, he joined Al Hilal last autumn for a staggering €40 million (about RMB 330 million). In his debut season, he scored 17 goals in 24 league appearances and added 5 more in the AFC Champions League.

However, with Al Hilal recently signing Uruguayan star Darwin Núñez and facing foreign player quota limits, Leonardo is now available for loan. On paper, a CSL move might seem ambitious given his market value and hefty Gulf salary. But history shows it’s not impossible—during the CSL’s spending boom, high-value stars were sometimes loaned out at surprisingly low costs simply to free up foreign player slots.
