WeChat Ramps Up Crackdown on “Proxy Chat” Scams with Stronger Penalties
On August 11, the WeChat Security Center issued an official notice targeting a growing wave of fraud schemes involving so-called “proxy chat recruits.” This announcement follows a surge of user complaints that revealed how scammers are exploiting external platforms to lure unsuspecting individuals into illicit activities.
According to the Security Center, fraudsters post recruitment ads for “chat assistants” under innocent pretexts—such as looking for pets, matchmaking, or even car scratches. Once connected on WeChat, they use excuses like “adding the wrong contact” to initiate conversations. Step by step, these “proxy chat recruits” are instructed to engage with potential victims and ultimately lure them into downloading third-party apps. Behind these apps, organized crime groups execute scams tied to fake cross-border e-commerce investments, online dating, rental fraud, and more.
The WeChat Security Center strongly warns users: do not take chances or get involved in activities that support cybercrime. Any account found participating will face escalating penalties in line with national laws and WeChat’s platform policies, including the Tencent WeChat Software License and Service Agreement and the WeChat Personal Account Usage Guidelines. Repeat violators risk permanent login restrictions. In addition, WeChat will compile evidence and fully cooperate with law enforcement and judicial authorities to pursue offenders.
The Security Center further reminds everyone: “Proxy chat recruits” are nothing more than traps set up by underground cybercriminal networks, using ordinary users as shields to commit crimes and evade supervision. If you knowingly participate after recognizing criminal activity, you could be held legally accountable.
Users who encounter such suspicious behavior on WeChat are encouraged to report it via the WeChat client or Tencent Guardian. Verified reports will be promptly investigated and acted upon. Above all, users are urged to stay vigilant: protect your personal information, be cautious when adding strangers, avoid falling for excuses like “wrongly added friend,” and never download unverified apps. These steps are essential to safeguarding your security and financial well-being.
Trump Approves Iran Strike Plan—But Halts Action Over Key Doubt: Can Fordow Be Penetrated?
According to The Wall Street Journal and Axios, President Trump has approved a military strike plan against Iran, but hesitated to proceed due to doubts over whether U.S. bunker-buster bombs can truly destroy Iran’s fortified Fordow nuclear site. While the U.S. has the necessary weapons, Trump remains uncertain about their effectiveness and the risk of long-term entanglement. He said he prefers not to act—but won’t rule out a “surgical strike” if needed.
