Leading Beijing U16 to Glory! Wang Changqing: “United as One, We Gave Our All to Execute the Coach’s Plan

On September 17, Beijing’s U16 men’s football team proudly claimed gold at the National Games, defeating Hubei 3–1 in the final. According to Beijing Sports Radio, head coach Wang Changqing praised his squad for pulling together with unity and determination.

The victorious team received a hero’s welcome on September 16 at Beijing Daxing Airport. As the young players and their coaching staff emerged, they were greeted warmly by officials and staff from the Beijing Sports Bureau and the city’s Football Association. Their triumph not only delivered Beijing’s first gold medal of this National Games in competitive sports, but also marked a historic milestone—the very first National Games gold in men’s football for Beijing.

For Wang Changqing, the victory carried special meaning. A former National Games player himself, he recalled the disappointment of 2001 when Beijing fell short in the quarterfinals. “Back then, we lost to Liaoning in the last eight. This time, leading the team as a coach and winning that crucial quarterfinal match felt incredibly emotional for me. It was like breaking through a barrier—and we finally achieved the best result,” Wang shared.

Reflecting on the championship run, Wang highlighted the team’s commitment and discipline. “The players truly came together as one, giving their all to follow the coach’s instructions. Match by match, their performance kept improving, and I was deeply moved by their dedication,” he said.

Looking ahead, Wang hopes this championship will be a catalyst for the growth of Beijing’s youth football system. “Talent determines the baseline, but it is scientific training and strong platforms that shape a player’s ceiling. I hope more children will embrace football, because only with wider participation can the sport have a bright future. Of course, it all has to be built step by step,” he concluded with optimism.
