Korean Actress Hwang Jung-Eum Sentenced for Embezzlement Linked to Cryptocurrency Investment

On September 25, renowned South Korean actress Hwang Jung-Eum was handed a two-year prison sentence with a four-year probation by the Jeju District Court’s Criminal Division 2. The ruling came after she was found guilty of embezzling 4.3 billion won (approximately 23 million RMB) from her own management company. The moment the verdict was delivered, Hwang reportedly broke down in tears in the courtroom.

According to the prosecution, between early 2022 and December of the same year, Hwang transferred more than 4.34 billion won from her wholly-owned family company, Hunminjeongeum Entertainment, into her personal account. Investigators revealed that over 4.2 billion won of the funds were funneled into cryptocurrency investments.

The case detailed how, in July 2022, Hwang first took out a company loan of 700 million won and disguised it as a “temporary expense,” transferring it into her personal account. Over the following months, she repeated similar transactions 13 times, ultimately siphoning off 4.36 billion won from the company.

In her defense, Hwang claimed she had been influenced by people around her and believed that investing in digital currency could help expand her company. However, the highly volatile nature of the crypto market meant that the massive sum was almost certainly lost.

This legal battle comes on the heels of her personal turmoil. On May 26, Hwang’s divorce from her ex-husband, businessman and former professional golfer Lee Young-Don, was officially finalized after a court-mediated settlement. The couple married in 2016, briefly reconciled after a 2020 divorce filing, and even welcomed their second child before separating again in 2024 amid allegations of infidelity. Earlier this year, Lee’s company also filed a lawsuit against Hwang, seeking to seize some of her real estate assets.

Born on January 25, 1985, in Seoul, Hwang Jung-Eum is a well-known actress and singer. A graduate of Suwon University, she first debuted in March 2002 as a member of the four-member girl group Sugar. She later gained fame as a regular guest on hit variety shows such as Love Letter (2005) and We Got Married (2009).

Over her career, Hwang has built an impressive portfolio of work, starring in popular dramas including High Kick Through the Roof, Giant, Full House 2, Secret, Kill Me, Heal Me, She Was Pretty, and Can You Hear My Heart.
