Yet this fiercely competitive, low-margin market has become Qualcomm’s latest battlefield. For the reigning smartphone chip champion, the move isn’t just about profits — it’s about survival in a game it must play. According to Counterpoint Research, Qualcomm remains the global leader in Android flagship smartphone chips with nearly 60% market share last year. But despite its dominance, CEO Cristiano Amon faces an unavoidable crisis. Smartphone growth has stagnated, and major clients like Xiaomi and Samsung are increasingly developing their own chips. Even more pressing, Apple — one of Qualcomm’s biggest customers — is preparing to phase out Qualcomm’s modem chips. Apple accounts for about 17% of Qualcomm’s total revenue, roughly $6 billion USD annually, but with Apple’s first in-house C1 modem now in use, analysts warn that Apple’s orders could vanish entirely by 2027. In response, Qualcomm has accelerated its diversification into IoT and automotive chips. These businesses are growing but still contribute modestly — automotive chips generated around $980 million last quarter, about 9% of total revenue. Promising long-term potential, yes, but not enough to fill the coming gap. That’s why Qualcomm is betting big on the next wave — AI-powered PCs. CEO Amon has boldly declared that the Snapdragon X Elite platform will become the go-to choice for PC makers in the AI era, with artificial intelligence as the driving force of computing’s future. But entering this market won’t be easy. The PC world remains dominated by the “Wintel” alliance — Microsoft and Intel — which still controls around 70% of global share. Qualcomm is differentiating itself with energy-efficient Arm architecture, but Apple was there first, using its own Arm-based chips to create Macs capable of lasting an entire day on a single charge. That innovation helped Apple lift its market share to 9.5%. Even more, rumors suggest Apple will soon launch a budget-friendly Mac priced below ¥5,000 RMB, potentially attracting even more consumers into its sticky ecosystem. As Omdia analyst Lin Xinliang points out, once users step into Apple’s world, it’s nearly impossible to leave. Facing shrinking smartphone demand and a potential 20% revenue cliff, Qualcomm knows it must transform not only its product strategy but also its mindset. Within just 15 months, the company has launched a complete AI PC lineup — from premium to mid-range — aiming to capture 12% of the PC market by 2029, surpassing Apple. But progress remains slow, with current share still under 3%. McGuire admits the company’s initial marketing approach missed the mark. “We found that AI felt too abstract for everyday consumers — it needs to be tangible and personal to truly resonate,” he said. This realization is driving a major shift in how Qualcomm communicates. Instead of speaking only to developers and OEMs, Qualcomm is now learning to speak directly to consumers — particularly Gen Z and young creators. Gone are the days of focusing on technical specs like cores or clock speeds. Today’s messaging is simple and emotional — slogans like “No charger? No problem” highlight battery life and convenience over complexity. Qualcomm is also aligning with creative communities, partnering with Yamaha for music production software and Razer for gaming peripherals to showcase how Snapdragon-powered PCs support content creation, gaming, and entertainment. Even design elements like premium gold-edged stickers on laptops reflect a new lifestyle-oriented branding approach. To support this transformation, Qualcomm built a 100-person “Go-To-Market” team focused on consumer engagement — a first for a company historically geared toward enterprise clients. For this engineering-driven organization, it’s an entirely new journey. “This is a learning experience,” McGuire admits. “We’re still figuring out how to build our own marketing voice.” In the smartphone era, Qualcomm’s dominance came from technical excellence. But in the AI PC era, technology alone isn’t enough. The real challenge lies in learning to speak the language of the consumer — connecting emotionally, not just functionally. For Qualcomm, this shift is more than entering a new product category; it’s a transformation of mindset. In the age of AI-driven experiences, innovation must meet empathy — because in this new world, connection is the ultimate competitive edge.
