Blogger Exposes KOLs for Not Reviewing Ads: Claims “Charge from 10% to 80% in Just 7 Seconds,” Sparks Online Mockery

October 12 — Recent buzz on Chinese social media has spotlighted a rather embarrassing marketing blunder. Several KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) were found promoting a brand ad claiming that a device could charge from 10% to 80% in just seven seconds — a statement so absurd it instantly drew widespread ridicule from netizens.

In response, well-known tech blogger @科技新一 took to Weibo to expose what he described as the deeper problems plaguing the KOL marketing ecosystem — and his remarks quickly went viral.

According to the blogger, this “collective slip-up” was no accident. “Most KOLs don’t even check the ad copy they post,” he revealed. The root cause, he explained, lies in the poor appeal of such hard-sell advertisements. Viewers have long developed the habit of automatically skipping over overtly promotional posts, leaving KOLs with little incentive to review or refine their content.

Instead, many influencers rely on surface-level engagement tactics — giveaways, lucky draws, and interactive red envelopes — to create the illusion of high interaction. In reality, few care about how many genuine users actually absorb the advertising message.

The blogger further noted that many brands evaluate campaign success purely by “engagement numbers,” without verifying whether those interactions are authentic or even real users. This “data over substance” mindset, he argued, leads to widespread inefficiency — with marketing budgets wasted and no meaningful results achieved. Only a handful of PR teams, he said, still put in the effort to craft thoughtful, impactful content that truly connects with audiences.

“As a veteran Weibo content creator, I find this quite disheartening,” the blogger concluded. The “7-second charging” fiasco, he said, not only revealed a lack of content scrutiny among KOLs but also reflected a deeper industry issue — a misplaced focus on form over substance in modern digital marketing.
