After a year of speculation, it’s official — Starbucks has partnered with Boyu Capital to form a new joint venture for its retail business in China.
By the end of fiscal 2025, Starbucks China operates 8,011 stores, with an ambitious target to expand to 20,000 locations.
Meanwhile, rival Luckin Coffee has already surpassed 27,000 stores and aims for 30,000 by year-end, proving China’s coffee market still has enormous growth potential.
Under the deal, Boyu Capital will hold up to 60% equity, while Starbucks retains 40% and continues as brand and IP licensor.
The valuation: roughly $4 billion (excluding cash and debt). Starbucks estimates its China business could exceed $13 billion in total value.
💼 Who is Boyu Capital?
Founded in 2011, Boyu Capital is an alternative asset management firm co-founded by Zhang Zixin (former Ping An GM) and Mary Ma (former TPG China head).
It manages over $10 billion across Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, and Singapore, with 200+ portfolio companies spanning private equity, public markets, infrastructure, and venture capital.
Recent investments include:
- Acquiring 42–45% of Beijing SKP, the world’s top luxury department store;
- Stakes in J&T Express, NetEase Cloud Music, Perfect Diary, Lalamove, Mixue Ice Cream, Hengrui Pharma, and more.
Boyu has earned a reputation for being “bold in expansion, quiet in execution.”
☕ Why Starbucks Needs a Partner in China
Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol — known as “Mr. Fix-it” for his turnarounds — admitted last year:
“We must fundamentally change our strategy to reignite growth in China.”
Partnering with a local powerhouse helps Starbucks adapt faster to a dynamic market.
Similar strategies have succeeded before — KFC and McDonald’s also transitioned from full ownership to local partnerships in China.
Starbucks has long used flexible models:
franchise operations in Taiwan and Hong Kong, direct ownership in Japan and mainland China.
Now, a joint venture with Boyu could accelerate expansion into smaller cities and new markets.
🚀 The 20,000-Store Vision
Niccol told CNBC that Starbucks China is worth over $10 billion, including retained equity and future royalties.
With Boyu’s backing, Starbucks aims to “write the next chapter” of its China story — one where global experience meets local insight,
and coffee ambition brews anew in the world’s most exciting consumer market.
