(Guangdong News) A heartwarming scene unfolded at the China National Games on Wednesday (Nov 19). Shortly after winning gold and setting a new world record in the men’s 102kg weightlifting event with a total of 414kg, Olympic champion Liu Huanhua of Tianjin successfully proposed to his girlfriend, Wei Lufan—celebrating a double delight.

The 24-year-old Paris Olympic champion dominated the event once again, lifting 185kg in the snatch and 229kg in the clean and jerk, breaking his own world record of 413kg set last year. His performance put him far ahead of Shandong’s Wang Zhihao (377kg) and completed the career Grand Slam of his weightlifting journey.

Moments after the medal ceremony, Liu appeared refreshed and well-groomed. When asked if he still had any unfulfilled wishes, he teased, “You’ll know in a moment.”

He then returned to the stage, knelt on one knee, and proposed:
“We’ve been through so much, and it hasn’t been easy for you. During the times when I struggled in training, you were the one who helped me through. I’ve lifted many heavy barbells in my life, but none feel heavier than the diamond ring I’m giving you today—that’s how serious I am. Lulu, will you marry me?”

Wei Lufan, also a Tianjin weightlifter, was moved to tears and extended her hand for Liu to slip on the ring, prompting a loud cheer from the audience.

The competition and proposal took place at Shilong Middle School Gymnasium in Dongguan, Guangdong. The couple later shared traditional Shilong malt candy—known for a history of over 100 years—as wedding sweets with the crowd, spreading joy and blessings.
