After 14 Years Steering Apple to a $4 Trillion Valuation, Reports Say Tim Cook Could Hand Over the Reins as Early as 2026

According to a November 15 report from the Financial Times, Apple is accelerating its CEO succession planning, with sources indicating that 65-year-old Tim Cook could step down as early as 2026. The company’s board and senior leadership team are already laying the groundwork for a smooth transition.
The report highlights that John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, is widely viewed as the leading contender to succeed Cook. However, no final decision has been made, and Apple declined to comment on the matter.
Insiders emphasize that the succession planning is unrelated to Apple’s current financial performance. The company is preparing for the year-end surge in iPhone sales, and the report notes that Apple could announce Cook’s successor as early as early 2026. Such timing would allow the new leadership team ample runway to prepare for two of Apple’s biggest annual events: the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June and the iPhone launch event in September.
Tim Cook, who turns 65 this month, took over as CEO in 2011 after succeeding Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Over the past 14 years, he has overseen extraordinary growth, guiding Apple’s market valuation from roughly $350 billion in 2011 to an astonishing $4 trillion today. Under Cook’s leadership, Apple has become one of the most profitable and influential technology companies in the world, propelled by his mastery in operations and global scale.
