The AFC Champions League, designed to showcase Asia’s top clubs, has once again been shaken by a major withdrawal. Last season, Shandong Taishan shocked the continent by pulling out right before their crucial match against Ulsan HD, despite being in a strong position to qualify. Their decision led to annulled results and heavy sanctions from the AFC. Many believed such punishment would prevent future incidents—but history seems to be repeating itself.

On September 30, the AFC officially announced that Mohun Bagan, one of India’s biggest clubs, has withdrawn from this season’s competition. The decision stemmed from disagreements with the AFC regarding scheduling and venue changes. In response, the AFC acted immediately and firmly: all of Mohun Bagan’s results in this season’s tournament have been voided.

The AFC has always maintained a zero-tolerance stance on unauthorized withdrawals. Shandong Taishan’s ban from continental competition for two years was a stark warning, bringing not only sporting consequences but also commercial and reputational damage. Now, all eyes are on Mohun Bagan: will they face the same fate and suffer a lengthy suspension from Asian football?
