Don’t Let the Voice Cast Be the Only “Crazy” Thing About Zootopia 2
After a nine-year wait, Zootopia 2 was supposed to be a long-anticipated animated event, combining nostalgia with high quality. But once the Chinese voice cast was announced—featuring Da Peng, Fei Xiang, Jin Chen and Wang Anyu—many viewers felt their excitement shift into disappointment. What was intended to boost publicity ended up sparking controversy.
Audience members who attended the premiere generally felt that the celebrities’ voices didn’t match the characters well.
Some said Da Peng’s strong Northeastern accent was distracting; Fei Xiang’s Mandarin was mocked as “business aristocrat speech.” Jin Chen tried to speed up her delivery and suppress her natural tone, yet her voice remained highly recognizable. Wang Anyu’s “lazy noble tone” was described by many as sounding like “a college student who just woke up.”
What further fueled dissatisfaction was the way promotion was arranged.
On posters, special tickets, and at the premiere, celebrities stood front and center, while animated characters and professional voice actors were visually and physically pushed to the side. For an animated film, this “putting real-life stars above the animated leads” felt like the priorities were upside down.
As a result, sharper questions followed:
“If they need dubbing for their own live-action roles, why are they qualified to dub animation?”
“Aren’t celebrities taking away jobs from professional voice actors?”
Voice actors have pointed out that dubbing isn’t just reading lines. In animation, the voice has to carry emotions, rhythm, and inner life. Breath, pacing, articulation, and intensity all matter. With weak line delivery, animated characters easily end up feeling “soulless.” Under the dual pressure of AI voice tech and celebrity crossovers, mid- and low-tier voice actors face an even harsher job market.
Of course, celebrity dubbing itself is not inherently wrong. Both Hollywood and China have successful examples where actors delivered excellent voice performances. The key questions are:
Are they the right fit? Is the performance professional? Does it truly serve the character—rather than just serve marketing?
The storm around Zootopia 2 isn’t about audiences suddenly becoming overly sensitive. It reflects growing resistance to a familiar pattern: traffic overshadowing professionalism, hype outweighing craft.
In the end, what viewers want is not just “big names in the cast,” but:
voices that truly fit the characters, performances that feel alive, and professionalism worthy of their expectations.
Otherwise, the only truly “crazy” thing about Zootopia 2 might end up being its voice-casting decisions.
