Exclusive Interview: Ali Lee & Lai Lok-yi Reunite in Triad Justice as the Ultimate Gangland Duo

(Kuala Lumpur, 21st) Award-winning actress Ali Lee and Lai Lok-yi reunite in Malaysia for Astro’s new drama Triad Justice. After previously playing a married couple in Who Wants a Baby?, the two now transform into a powerful triad duo — “Sister Bing,” a cool and formidable mob matriarch, and “Brother Hon,” a loyal gang leader. This marks their first time filming a series in Malaysia, and both shared that their chemistry has only grown stronger.

Ali Lee, who left TVB last year, chose Triad Justice as her first series after becoming independent. She admitted she accepted the role purely because Lai Lok-yi invited her, making this long-awaited reunion possible. Lai praised his co-star warmly and said filming overseas allowed them to reconnect and recover the rapport they once had.

The drama focuses on internal struggles within a triad group after its leader dies. Amid the chaos, Sister Bing and Brother Hon rely on each other and slowly develop a complex emotional connection. Lai shared that he hasn’t taken on action roles in years, so returning to more physical scenes made him excited — he even resumed intense exercise while filming in Malaysia. He teased that the drama includes scenes showcasing his physique.

Ali said she was attracted by the fresh challenge of a triad-themed story and the chance to collaborate with Malaysian actors. This project also marks her first time performing lines fully in Mandarin.

Both actors recalled memorable filming moments — from adapting to the loud motorbike sounds near shooting locations to working under Malaysia’s hot and rainy weather. Lai joked that Ali often filmed in air-conditioned shopping malls while he endured outdoor scenes at fishing ports.

They highlighted a particularly emotional confrontation scene involving shouting, slapping and intense acting, which they repeated several times not due to mistakes but to perfect the effect. Lai complimented Ali’s strength as an actress, saying her performance elevated the scene.

Their long-standing partnership proved strong once again, as both said they resolve creative differences easily and enjoy working together. Triad Justice premieres December 14 at 9:30 PM on Astro AEC (Channel 306) and Astro GO.
