Huang Fan-shuo Debuts as an Author, Shares His Teaching Philosophy and Says He Has “No Failed Cases”

(Kuala Lumpur, 24th) Well-known vocal coach and musician Huang Fan-shuo, who has devoted many years to vocal education, has officially stepped into the literary world with the launch of his first book, Why Do You Sing?. The book launch was star-studded, with many of his artist-students—including Da Ying, Xavier Khoo, Gaston Pong, and others—showing up to support him.

Following his audio project of the same name released seven years ago, Huang expanded the concept into a book that compiles years of teaching and research. He introduces two self-developed frameworks: VocalDNA™, a system for understanding individual voice traits, and VocalGPS™, a method designed to help readers reconnect with singing through physical and emotional awareness. He shared that the book took seven years to complete, merging insights from music, psychology, ergonomics and more.

Huang admitted that he once struggled with doubt while writing:
“I was afraid no one would buy it. I almost gave up.”
Fortunately, fellow musician Ching Shi Peng kept encouraging him, eventually helping him push through. Huang also thanked his students and their families for inspiring the book.

Speaking on the theme “Why do you sing?”, Huang opened up about a painful experience from his youth. He said he once suffered such a harsh setback that he avoided singing for ten years, before eventually regaining confidence and even winning a singing competition in Sabah.
“If I can overcome that, I want to help those facing something similar,” he said.

Huang proudly shared that he treats every student equally and claims he has “never had a failed case”—even students who struggled with pitch were able to improve significantly under his guidance. Still, he joked that certain students—such as Han Yi Na, Tan Wei Wen, and Zeng Xi Yan—had challenged his patience, often forgetting techniques after learning them. He admitted he used to be stricter, but has since shifted to a gentler, more supportive teaching style.

When discussing how he coaches Da Ying, he explained:
“She has a very distinctive voice. My job is to make her voice sustainable and refined without losing her uniqueness.”
He added that Gaston and Pong Ling-yu also have strong personal vocal identities, and emphasized that he never trains students to sound mechanical—he wants them to keep their individuality.

The event ended with Huang and his guests releasing paper airplanes, symbolizing their hope that the book will “fly high and far.”
