Accelerating Its Shift to AI, Amazon Expands While Simultaneously Cutting Jobs

SEATTLE, Nov 24 — Amazon is expanding aggressively into artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure while simultaneously trimming white-collar headcount, accelerating its transition between “heavy investment in innovation” and “operational cost efficiency.”

The company announced on Friday (21st) that it will invest at least US$3 billion (RM12.4 billion) to build a next-generation AI and cloud data center campus in Warren County, Mississippi. Meanwhile, new state-level WARN filings reveal that among the more than 14,000 layoffs initiated in October, over 4,700 roles have been officially disclosed — and more than 1,800 of them are engineering positions, with mid-level engineers hit hardest.

Amazon shares closed up 1.63% at US$220.69 on Friday.

Preparing for an AI “compute arms race”

The Warren County data center will become a key hub in Amazon’s North American compute infrastructure. Analysts note that as AI model training and inference workloads surge, global tech giants are entering a new “compute arms race.”

Amazon’s massive capital commitment aims to:

• Strengthen AWS and its AI platforms
• Capture enterprise-level AI and cloud customers
• Stimulate local jobs and infrastructure development

Engineer layoffs dominate; mid-level engineers most affected

According to WARN disclosures:

• Over 40% of eliminated roles are engineering jobs (>1,800 engineers)
• More than 500 product and program managers are also affected
• Cloud, devices, advertising, retail and grocery divisions all face cuts
• The gaming division sees major downsizing, with many AAA and MMO projects halted
• The New York office loses over 140 advertising and marketing roles

Mid-level engineers (SDE II) are the hardest hit. Industry observers say AI coding tools from Cursor, OpenAI, Cognition and Amazon’s own Kiro have automated large portions of software development, reducing demand for traditional mid-tier engineering work.

Amazon: A “leaner organization” for the AI era

HR chief Beth Galetti wrote in a memo that the restructuring aims to build a leaner organization optimized for AI-driven operations, calling modern AI “the most disruptive technology since the internet.”

More broadly, over 230 tech companies have laid off more than 113,000 employees so far this year, underscoring the industry’s ongoing post-pandemic “streamlining” trend.
