IT Home, November 28 — UK car production plunged 24% year-on-year in October, mainly due to a major cyberattack that forced Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the country’s largest automaker, to halt operations. JLR was hit on August 31 and suspended vehicle production the next day, with its Solihull and Halewood plants operating well below capacity until mid-October. According to the SMMT, only 59,010 vehicles were produced in October, down by 18,474 units from last year.
From January to October, the UK built 602,109 vehicles, falling short of last year’s 670,000+. SMMT CEO Mike Hawes said the cyberattack had left a “lingering impact,” although government measures—including a £1.5 billion automotive innovation fund—suggest the sector’s growth prospects remain intact. However, the UK government’s newly confirmed plan to introduce a mileage-based tax for BEVs and PHEVs from 2028 has drawn criticism for undermining EV adoption. Electrified vehicles accounted for 46.2% of October’s production, though detailed breakdowns were not disclosed.
