Why 59-year-old Kazuyoshi Miura still refuses to retire: his training kit is covered with sponsors, earning him an annual income of 18 million yen.

On November 30, in the JFL promotion–relegation playoff, Suzuka Point Getters suffered a 0–1 defeat to JEF United Chiba and were relegated. However, despite turning 59 next February, veteran striker Kazuyoshi Miura has confirmed that he intends to continue playing next season. Many wonder why Miura keeps going at such an advanced age. Aside from his love for football, the answer also includes financial incentives.
This season marks Miura’s 40th year as a professional footballer, but he did not score a single goal. After the match, he admitted, “I’ve had injuries throughout the year, and there’s a lot to reflect on. From voluntary training at the end of last year to the training camp in January, I plan to begin voluntary training again this December.”
Despite going two straight seasons without scoring, Miura continues to prepare for the future. Reports suggest that his former club Yokohama FC hopes to re-sign him. Miura, who has been married for 32 years, said: “Every day I wake up with the desire to score. I challenge myself, train every day, and live a disciplined life, just like always.”
Japanese media also revealed that Miura employs four personal chefs who prepare meals strictly according to a nutritionist’s plan to keep him in peak condition.
Beyond his passion, money is also part of the reason he keeps playing. His training gear is covered with sponsor logos—almost like an F1 racing suit. As early as two years ago, Japanese media estimated that Miura’s endorsement deals were worth more than 400 million yen, roughly 18 million RMB.
Even though he has not scored in two years, Miura still holds immense value. Every appearance allows him to break his own record as the oldest player on the pitch. In addition to club salary and sponsorships, Miura runs a sizable business empire: he endorses PUMA football boots in Japan and represents the men’s beauty brand Dantei House. As long as he continues playing, both the “legend” status and the financial rewards will keep flowing his way.
