(Kuala Lumpur) Perodua has issued a clarification regarding confusion surrounding a document circulating online related to its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program. The document included a statement suggesting that the use of batteries must be “Shariah compliant,” prompting widespread misunderstanding among the public.

Perodua explained that the wording was the result of a communication error and emphasized that the company never intended to require users to operate their vehicles or batteries in accordance with Islamic teachings.

Perodua CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad stated that the controversial phrase had been “miscommunicated,” especially the part concerning Shariah compliance. “At no point did we intend to mandate customers to use their vehicles in a manner that adheres to Islamic law,” he clarified.

To prevent further confusion, Perodua has updated its BaaS disclosure documents and removed the clause that previously suggested vehicles and batteries were “to be used only in Shariah-compliant ways.”

The company added that the battery rental model follows the Islamic finance concept of Operating Ijarah, but this does not impose any restrictions on how customers use their vehicles.
