A staggering 3.1 billion in just five days — now No.1 worldwide. But can “Nezha 2” keep its all-time box office crown?

In today’s Chinese film market, the biggest box office surprise isn’t a domestic blockbuster — it’s Disney’s animated sequel Zootopia 2.
The film has already surpassed 2.1 billion RMB domestically and is on track to cross 3 billion, with some analysts predicting it may even push toward 4 billion.
Globally, the film debuted with $445 million (31B RMB), topping the worldwide box office in its opening week. Its total has now exceeded $629 million, giving it a real shot at surpassing the first film’s $1 billion milestone.
And it’s not merely a commercial win — critics love it too:
- Douban: 8.7
- Rotten Tomatoes: 93% Fresh
- Metacritic: 75
A certified critical and commercial hit.
01 Why is “Zootopia 2” so successful? Social metaphor + universal appeal
The film works because it appeals to everyone.
Kids enjoy the cute animals; adults enjoy the metaphors.
If the first film addressed racial stereotypes, the sequel tackles social labeling and prejudice.
Examples:
- Gary the Snake keeps his venom but carries antidote around
- The reptile district defies stereotypes
- The seemingly harmless lynx family turns expectations upside down
These subtle metaphors give the film a surprising level of sophistication.
Meanwhile, comedic moments land perfectly — Flash the sloth races again, Mr. Big becomes a doting grandpa, The Godfather homage returns — all crowd-pleasers.
And of course, Judy and Nick’s relationship progresses, sparking fandom uproar.
Their emotional line — “You’re my bunny burrow” — hits romantic and platonic notes at once, exactly what fans wanted.
02 Disney courts the Chinese market — but even it can’t shake Nezha 2
Disney clearly understands the massive influence of China’s box office.
This time, the studio made specific efforts:
- Introducing a snake character to match China’s Year of the Snake
- Adding martial arts moves inspired by Jackie Chan
- Launching a themed area at Shanghai Disney
China is Hollywood’s largest overseas market — attention is expected.
But despite Zootopia 2’s strong performance, it still cannot threaten the reigning champion:
“Nezha 2”
The film grossed 15.9 billion RMB (about $2.1B), ranking fifth in global box office history.
Meaning:
Even both Zootopia films combined don’t surpass Nezha 2.
And beyond numbers, the films' core styles differ:
- Nezha 2 blends mythology, philosophy, and Chinese aesthetics
- Zootopia 2 focuses on animation techniques and world expansion
One is culturally profound; the other is technically polished.
With the rise of Chinese animation, audience loyalty naturally shifts.
