At 1 a.m. Beijing time on December 5, NBA insider Shams reported that Giannis Antetokounmpo will be sidelined for 2-4 weeks due to a right calf strain. During the Bucks vs. Pistons game, Giannis left the court just 3 minutes into the match. Fans worldwide speculate: is Milwaukee “protecting their trade asset” to prevent injury before a potential deal?

Trade rumors around Giannis have reached fever pitch, with many believing he may have played his final game for the Bucks. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst stated: “Milwaukee will not allow an open bidding war for Giannis. He will choose his preferred destination, and the Bucks will do their best to facilitate a trade to that team.”

Current odds for Giannis’ next team:

  • Bucks: 30%
  • Knicks: 27%
  • Spurs: 10%
Others: Hawks, Rockets, Lakers, Raptors, Pistons. Notably, the Bucks have no interest in Karl-Anthony Towns.

Trading complications abound. The Knicks, for example, would need to use Anunoby and Barrett to match salaries, but Barrett just renewed his contract and cannot be traded until January 31. If Giannis enters the market, it is certain to shake the entire NBA.

During his recovery, Giannis and his agent will meet with Bucks management to discuss his future. According to Shams, a decision is expected by the end of the month. The Warriors have little chance, as Kuminga cannot be traded until January 15.

So far this season, Giannis has started 17 games, averaging 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.9 blocks in 29.1 minutes per game. Shooting splits: 63.9% FG, 43.5% 3P, 63.5% FT. His contract: 3 years, $175M, including a player option for 2027-28.

The burning question: where will Giannis go next? Can the Bucks keep their superstar?
