Breaking: Viral AI Pendant Firm Suddenly Acquired by Meta, Sparking a Wave of Refund Demands

From launch to acquisition, Limitless—the company behind what it claimed to be the world’s smallest wearable AI device—completed the entire “AI hardware startup lifecycle” in just over a year.

And just moments ago, Meta officially announced that it has acquired wearable AI device maker Limitless. CEO Dan Siroker shared the news on social media, writing:

“Meta recently unveiled its new vision: giving everyone access to personal superintelligence. A key pillar of that plan is building powerful AI wearables. We share the same mission, and together, we’re going to bring this future to life.”

In a longer statement, Siroker explained the background behind the decision:

“When we founded Limitless five years ago, the world was a very different place. Most people still viewed AI as fantasy, hardware startups had little access to funding, and companies trying to build both AI and hardware were often dismissed as unrealistic. Today, everything has changed. We’re no longer walking an ‘edge-case’ path—we’re building a future that feels inevitable.”

The acquisition means Limitless will halt sales of many of its current products, including its wildly popular wearable AI Pendant, designed to record meetings and conversations. However, the company will continue offering at least one year of technical support for existing Pendant users.

Limitless also announced a series of changes for current customers. Existing users will no longer need to pay subscription fees and will automatically be upgraded to the Unlimited plan at no cost. At the same time, Limitless Desktop and Web apps will no longer support meeting recording, and the company plans to gradually sunset its Rewind app.

On the subject of privacy, Limitless emphasized that all users—whether they continue using the Pendant or not—must agree to the updated privacy policy and terms of service. Users can easily export all their personal data, or choose to delete it entirely through the app.

While many in Siroker’s comment section shared their congratulations, a sizable number of users voiced concerns—and even demanded refunds—given Meta’s infamous history with privacy.

A Real-Time Typist, Supercharged with AI

Limitless’ Pendant entered the market looking somewhat similar to the LARK MIX microphone once released by Maono. Weighing just 9 grams, LARK MIX featured a 48kHz/24Bit sampling rate and became a favorite for outdoor creators.

Though similar in size and appearance, these two devices represent entirely different eras of product philosophy.

LARK MIX focused on superior audio capture while dramatically shrinking the footprint and weight of traditional gear. The Pendant, on the other hand, housed an LLM that could continuously record and summarize conversations—effectively giving users an AI-augmented memory.

Shortly after launch, Siroker announced that the pendant had sold over 20,000 units, with most buyers coming from China and the United States.

Put simply, the Limitless Pendant was a simplified version of the Humane Ai Pin. It lacked the Ai Pin’s laser ink display, video camera, and modular battery clip. It kept just one core function: audio.

But thanks to onboard AI, that single function became far more powerful. Users could ask questions, receive responses, and have the device interact with apps on their Mac or Windows PC—essentially integrating multiple tools into a tiny screenless wearable.

According to Siroker, Limitless was founded on one core belief: AI should enhance human intelligence, not replace it.

Because the Pendant records in real time, it effectively acts as a voice-based memory system—helping users overcome the limitations of human attention and recall. It isn’t about compensating for a lack of brainpower, but about giving us a backup system for the flood of daily information.

Everything you say is recorded and summarized instantly. This is the foundation of its three core functions: Transcript, Notes, and Summary.

Transcription alone is no longer impressive in the age of LLMs—but true summarization is where AI must prove its strength. It must capture key ideas, maintain structure, and avoid missing critical details.

In a demo video, Siroker showed the Pendant neatly organizing nearly ten minutes of content into action items, key updates, priorities, and current challenges—something traditionally done manually after long meetings.

It even detected subtle design philosophy notes such as “augment, not replace, human intelligence.” With tools like this, missing important points because you looked away for a moment may soon become a thing of the past.

Minimalist Intelligence

Beyond software, the Pendant’s hardware design is remarkably simple.

Its U-shaped clip allows it to hang like a necklace or attach to clothing with a magnetic mount. During launch, Siroker called it “the easiest AI hardware in the world to wear.”

At just 31.9mm wide and 16mm thick, it’s smaller than a first-generation AirPods case. Inside this tiny form factor is a battery that lasts up to 100 hours, drastically reducing the anxiety of frequent charging—a sharp contrast to the Ai Pin, whose early users complained about barely making it through a few hours of light use.

Despite having no screen, the Pendant retains essential hardware features, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and standalone functionality without a smartphone.

It includes two physical buttons: one for recording and one for AI interaction. A small signal light indicates when recording is active to ensure transparency—similar to the Ai Pin’s “trust light.”

The top side houses an array of microphones. Though Siroker didn’t share technical specifications, he stated that even in a busy café, the pendant delivers “crystal-clear audio.”

Personalization is another theme repeated throughout the product’s design. The Pendant not only learns from your context and behavior but can also offer personalized recommendations depending on what you’re about to do.

For example, when preparing to film a statement video, the Pendant advised Siroker to slow down his speech, engage with the camera, blink naturally, and avoid awkward accents—demonstrating its situational awareness.

Even its color choices were designed to reflect individuality.

The Unavoidable Question: What Is It Actually Good For?

Privacy remains the biggest challenge for AI wearables. These devices need data to get smarter, but unrestricted data collection only drives public distrust.

Limitless addressed this with a three-tier privacy system.

First is the mandatory “recording light,” ensuring transparent capture.

Second is an explicit consent requirement. The device will not record third-party conversations unless someone clearly agrees—only then will it open a new speaker capture window.

Third is its “privacy cloud.” Traditional apps often sacrifice user privacy for cloud-powered convenience. Cloud platforms like Slack or Gmail provide incredible utility but raise complicated privacy concerns.

Limitless' privacy cloud aims to balance both worlds. Cloud services remain available, but all sensitive data stays local unless unlocked by the user.

Siroker has been clear about how Limitless approaches privacy—and equally clear about the company’s roadmap.

Compared to the Ai Pin, the Pendant had a much sharper product focus. Rather than trying to reinvent the smartphone, it doubled down on sound—a familiar, essential, and incredibly practical medium.

It also fully embraced smartphones, planning native apps for both iOS and Android. In a world where the phone remains the dominant personal device, acknowledging its centrality is not a weakness—it’s a strategy.

Overly ambitious reinventions of hardware often backfire. The Ai Pin proved exactly that.

When Siroker priced the Pendant at just $99—compared to Ai Pin’s $699—he didn’t miss the chance to subtly poke fun at that contrast.

This was the Pendant: a purpose-built AI audio tool. Not the most powerful, not the most complete, but clear in purpose and accessible in price—precisely why it met user expectations more consistently than many competitors.

But as tech giants double down on AI wearables, small startups—no matter how innovative—struggle to remain independent. Hardware development is expensive, supply chains are complex, and educating the market takes time.

And so, Limitless has ultimately followed the same path as the Ai Pin.
