(Frankfurt, 22nd) As the year draws to a close, market participants are observing a notable structural shift in global bond markets. This year, global borrowers raised more than US$2.2 trillion through euro-denominated bond issuance, representing a year-on-year increase of over 19% and marking a new historical record.
The trend highlights a simultaneous rise in euro-based financing and asset allocation amid shifting interest-rate and currency dynamics. Market observers note that euro-denominated bond supply has now increased for a third consecutive year. While the growth rate is slightly below last year’s near-21% surge, it remains close to 20%, signalling strong demand from both issuers and investors seeking alternatives beyond US dollar assets.
The role of euro-denominated bonds has become increasingly prominent, particularly in cross-currency funding strategies and ultra-long-dated bond allocations.
Dollar dominance remains intact
Currency movements have also supported the shift. The US dollar index has fallen more than 9% year to date, reflecting portfolio rebalancing away from dollar assets and the narrowing of interest-rate differentials amid a global easing cycle. Against this backdrop, issuing bonds in euros can help diversify foreign-exchange risk and potentially reduce overall funding costs for some borrowers.
That said, the US dollar’s dominant position in the global financing system remains largely unchallenged. Of the roughly US$9.57 trillion raised in global debt markets this year, about US$4.5 trillion—nearly 50%—was denominated in US dollars, underscoring the greenback’s continued status as the primary funding currency.
Nevertheless, record-high euro bond issuance and sustained strong growth underscore a broader shift: global capital allocation and funding strategies are gradually moving away from reliance on a single currency toward a more diversified approach.
