The Cost of a Trillion-Dollar Valuation: OpenAI is Losing Its Founders

Steve Jobs once likened Fairchild Semiconductor to a dandelion: when the wind blew, its seeds scattered, took root, and eventually grew into a Silicon Valley forest. OpenAI may be the Fairchild of the AI era. In its race to reach a trillion-dollar valuation, the steepest price it is paying might be the loss of its founding team.

As of December 2025, only CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman remain from OpenAI’s original 11-member founding team. Increasingly, resources have shifted from pure exploratory research to commercial products like GPT-5.2, and the once idealistic lab culture is giving way to bureaucracy and commercialization. At the same time, under Mark Zuckerberg’s leadership, Meta has aggressively poached OpenAI’s top technical talent with near-unlimited resources and compensation.

Core researchers such as Shengjia Zhao, Jason Wei, Trapit Bansal, and Jiahui Yu have joined Meta, redistributing AI expertise across the industry. Others, like Liam Fedus, have chosen a more disruptive path with “AI for Science,” founding Periodic Labs to apply AI in physical laboratories, aiming for the next generation of scientific breakthroughs.

Amid this wave of departures and transformation, OpenAI’s brand and technology remain industry-leading, but the source of innovation is dispersing. Like Fairchild Semiconductor, its true legacy may lie not only in its achievements but in the founders it has nurtured—and how they continue to shape the future of AI.

Bitcoin Surges Past $120K to New Record, 100K Liquidated — Institutions Eye $200K by Year-End

On July 14, Bitcoin crossed the $120,000 mark for the first time, setting a new all-time high. Within 24 hours, over 100,000 traders were liquidated. Some institutions now forecast Bitcoin to hit $200,000 by the end of the year. Analysts, however, urge caution, warning of potential pullbacks and looming macro “black swan” risks.
