On December 28, techAU reported that the EU plans to enforce a new regulation starting December 2028, requiring all external power adapters sold in the EU to feature USB-C ports and detachable cables. The rule covers devices such as routers, monitors, and smart home hubs, aiming to standardize charging and reduce electronic waste.

The regulation applies to devices up to 240W, meaning a high-quality GaN charger could power multiple devices on your desk. The EU expects significant environmental benefits: by 2035, overall charger energy consumption is projected to drop by 3%, and consumers could save around €100 million annually. A “Universal Charger” label will also help users quickly identify compliant products and their maximum output.

This regulation builds on the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), which already mandates USB-C charging for smartphones, tablets, and cameras from late 2024, with laptops to follow from April 2026.
