According to Brazilian media Grupo Ahora, former Chinese Super League star and Brazilian midfielder Ivo will officially return to the pitch in January, joining amateur Brazilian club São José in Rio Grande do Sul. While it’s only an amateur league, for 39-year-old Ivo, who has been out for a year, this comeback is highly meaningful. Ivo expressed on the club’s social media: “I’m excited to play in Brazil again. I will give my all for the team and always put the club and fans first.”

Ivo’s career in China was impressive—especially at Henan, where he earned the nickname “poor man’s Conca.” He scored 21 goals and provided 38 assists in the CSL, proving himself a central figure on the field. Yet, his career also had regrets: during China’s 2019 naturalization wave, Ivo was a potential national team candidate, but due to age, the spot went to Paulinho. Ironically, a year later Paulinho failed FIFA’s eligibility check, while Ivo remained excluded.

Now, at 39, Ivo can no longer compete at his peak and plays in amateur leagues, while China’s national team continues to struggle in midfield. His missed opportunity remains a poignant chapter in the country’s naturalization strategy.
