Attention Drivers! AI Traffic Cameras in Action: 2,500 Violations Caught in Four Days

On December 29, Greece released the first operational data from AI traffic cameras piloted in Athens. In just four days, nearly 2,500 serious traffic violations were recorded.
On Singrou Avenue, connecting Athens to Piraeus, a single AI camera captured over 1,000 violations—almost half of the total in the pilot area. Other hotspots include the intersection of Mesogeion Avenue and Charalambidou Avenue in Agia Paraskevi, with 480 red-light violations, and the intersection of Voriagmeni Avenue and Tinos Street in Kallisia, with 285 cases.

These smart cameras detect not only red-light running but also speeding, seatbelt violations, mobile phone use while driving, and illegal use of emergency lanes. They automatically generate timestamped videos and photos as a complete evidence chain. Violators receive electronic notifications via SMS, email, or government portals, and can pay fines online.
Fines vary: seatbelt or mobile phone violations cost €350, while speeding ranges from €150 to €750. A single camera could generate an estimated €750,000 in fines within four days.

The Greek government plans to expand the nationwide monitoring network with 2,000 fixed cameras and 500 mobile devices. Mobile units will be installed on buses to enforce bus lane regulations. The deployment of AI traffic cameras marks a new era of intelligent traffic enforcement and underscores the importance of safe, responsible driving.
