(Macau, Dec 30) Chinese singer Zhang Jie, who married actress and TV host Xie Na in 2011 and shares three daughters with her, recently found himself at the center of controversy after inviting his wife to appear as a guest at his concert. The move sparked backlash from some fans, prompting Zhang to address the issue directly during his performance on the 29th.
Zhang is holding a three-night year-end concert series in Macau. Ahead of the shows, rehearsal footage featuring Zhang and Xie Na surfaced online, leading some fans to criticize his studio for not announcing in advance that Xie would appear as a duet dance guest. These fans argued that the lack of disclosure infringed on their right to know and choose, stressing that they purchased tickets to enjoy Zhang’s music—not a display of spousal interaction.
In response, Zhang delivered an emotional monologue lasting nearly nine minutes during the first concert on December 29. He shared that beyond being a singer, he is also a husband and a father, and emphasized that before becoming a successful artist, he wanted to be a good man. Referring to his song My Love, Zhang said the inspiration behind it was his enduring love for Xie Na, and that every time he sings it, she is the person he thinks of.
Following his remarks, many netizens voiced support for Zhang online. Comments included: “If his wife is considered an ‘irrelevant person,’ then what does that make the fans?” and “They’ve been married for over a decade and have three children—why can’t his wife be a guest?” Others pointed out that concerts routinely feature guest performers and dancers, questioning why a long-time spouse should be treated differently. Some also criticized what they saw as fans overstepping boundaries and interfering excessively in artists’ personal lives.
