Man United Rising Star Meno Considers Permanent Exit: Amrolín’s Promises Insufficient, Substitute Role Looms Unless Manager Changes

According to the UK’s Daily Mirror, 20-year-old Manchester United midfielder Coby Meno is reportedly considering a permanent exit from Old Trafford. He is frustrated with his role under Ruben Amrolín and sees little chance of change in the near future.

During the summer transfer window, Meno explored a loan move to gain more playing time, hoping Amrolín might be sacked due to poor results. However, with the team’s performance improving and club owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe publicly backing Amrolín for three more years, Meno now faces the reality of remaining a substitute.

Currently, Meno is behind Bruno Fernandes in the pecking order and may have to compete with new midfield signings like Elliott Anderson and Adam Walton in the future. The 40-year-old Portuguese coach does not favor Meno’s style, which leans toward possession and lacks high-intensity movement. Despite Amrolín declaring Meno “the future of Manchester United,” in the 3-4-3 formation, Meno struggles to find a fitting role: insufficient technical ability for the No.10, and insufficient movement for No.6 or No.8.

Meno’s luck has also been poor. When Casemiro was suspended and Bruno Fernandes injured, he had a chance to start but missed out due to a minor calf injury. With the January transfer window approaching, Meno is now considering a permanent move, with several European clubs showing interest. Serie A side Napoli is a likely destination, inspired by former teammates Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund reviving their careers in Italy.

Meno’s contract with United runs until 2027 with a one-year extension option. Currently earning £50,000 per week, he seeks a raise to £200,000, but talks have stalled. If circumstances remain unchanged, the next 18 months may be the optimal window for United to sell the academy graduate.

While some fear Meno might become a superstar elsewhere, leaving United embarrassed, the experiences of Martial and Rashford remind us that not every talent becomes a Salah or De Bruyne.
