【TechWeb】TSMC has officially confirmed that its highly anticipated 2nm N2 process has entered mass production in Q4 2025. This milestone marks another major breakthrough in advanced semiconductor manufacturing and ushers in a new era of higher-performance, more energy-efficient chips worldwide.

According to TSMC’s official “Logic Process” webpage, the N2 process status has been updated from “development progressing well” to “mass production,” with the page last updated on December 16, confirming that production is on schedule.

The N2 process uses nanosheet-based GAA (Gate-All-Around) transistors, representing a revolutionary leap in semiconductor manufacturing. TSMC states that N2 will become the industry’s most advanced process in terms of transistor density and energy efficiency, delivering significant performance and power improvements across chip designs. Compared with its predecessor N3E, N2 achieves 1.15× transistor density, 24%-35% lower power consumption, 15% performance gain, and an industry-leading SRAM density of 37.9Mb/mm², providing robust hardware support for high-performance computing and AI applications.

N2 comes with a premium price tag: industry sources report initial wafer costs of $30,000 per wafer (over ¥200,000), meaning only deep-pocketed manufacturers can afford it, further solidifying TSMC’s leadership in high-end semiconductor manufacturing.

In a surprising twist, AMD’s Zen6 processor (codename Venice) has beaten Apple to market as the first product using TSMC’s 2nm process. In April, AMD announced its sixth-generation EPYC processors would use TSMC’s 2nm technology, with AMD CEO Lisa Su and TSMC CEO C.C. Wei jointly showcasing EPYC wafers, highlighting their close collaboration. Traditionally, Apple would have been the first to adopt TSMC’s latest process, expected to use N2 for the 2026 iPhone 18 series.
