On December 30, Apple filed an appeal with the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal, seeking to overturn a £1.5 billion (≈$1.76B) antitrust ruling. The case began when Rachel Kent of King’s College London represented 36 million UK consumers, suing Apple for excessive App Store fees and winning in October.

The ruling required Apple to reduce app sales commissions to 17.5% and in-app purchase commissions to 10%, down from the previous 30%, citing anti-competitive practices. Apple rejects the verdict, arguing the court misjudged the “prosperous and competitive app ecosystem,” and noted most apps are charged only 15%.

If the appeal fails, UK consumers who purchased apps from 2015-2024 could receive compensation. Apple also faces separate allegations of overcharging via iCloud services.
