(Kuala Lumpur, Jan 2) The long-awaited film adaptation of the classic IP A Step Into the Past returned to the big screen on Dec 31, 2025—after a 25-year wait. In Malaysia, the movie has surged past RM3.5 million in total box office within just two days, signaling a strong start.

With reports noting that the 2025 Christmas box office fell by more than 30% compared with the same period in 2024, the film has been widely viewed as a potential “market saver.” Its Malaysian opening was particularly striking: day-one takings exceeded RM1.45 million, making it the highest-opening Hong Kong film in Malaysia for 2025.

The release has also seen exceptionally dense scheduling, with some cinemas reportedly screening the film every 15 minutes—jokingly described as “more frequent than bus services.” Beyond positive results in Hong Kong and Malaysia, the film’s pre-sales in China have also been reported as topping the charts.

Responding to the film setting a new pre-sale record for a Hong Kong title in Malaysia, executive producer and lead actor Louis Koo quipped, “Now we can eat.” He added that if the box office momentum continues, he will visit Malaysia with Jessica Hsuan and Raymond Lam for a celebration and an early New Year greeting to audiences.
