Jackie Chan, 71, says he’s ready for a “farewell song,” adding that he now hesitates far less than before.

He has recently been promoting his new heartfelt film Guojiajia, in which he breaks away from his action-hero image. Appearing without heavy styling—white hair, visible wrinkles, and a subdued look—Chan plays Ren Jiqing, an elderly man living alone while coping with cognitive decline. His careful body language and nuanced expressions have drawn attention.

According to Hong Kong media reports, Chan prepared for the role by visiting a nursing home before filming, aiming to better understand seniors’ daily lives and emotional states to bring greater authenticity to his performance.

In an earlier interview, Chan also revealed that he has asked a team to write a “farewell song” for him—one that will only be released after he passes away. Reflecting on the many friends and relatives he has lost over the years, he said he has come to accept life’s impermanence and now tries to say what he wants to say and do what he wants to do, without overthinking. He added that being able to grow old slowly is a form of luck.

After the trailer was released, many viewers shared emotional reactions, saying Chan’s non-combat, drama-focused performance hit them unexpectedly hard—even before watching the film.

Responding to the feedback, Chan said he felt encouraged that a new kind of role could resonate with audiences. He also stressed that this does not mean he is “done” with action; as long as he is still capable, he will continue performing. He further mentioned plans to proceed with a sequel to Catch the Wind and Chase the Shadow, inviting fans to look forward to his upcoming work.

Starring Jackie Chan, Peng Yuchang, Zhang Jianing, Pan Binlong, and Li Ping, Guojiajia is directed by young filmmaker Li Taiyan and produced by Han Sanping. The film is set for release in Hong Kong on January 15, 2026. The story follows “Uncle Ren” (Chan), a retired landlord who, due to cognitive decline, mistakes a hardworking young tenant, Zhong Bufan (Peng), for the son he lost years ago. As other tenants become involved, they unexpectedly form a temporary family and face life’s challenges together—along with secrets the elderly man has long kept hidden—highlighting the power of love and acceptance.
