Both Shanghai and Shenzhen hit new highs—just how strong is China’s stock market?

(Beijing, Jan 7) China’s stock market has extended its strong start to the year. On Tuesday (Jan 6), the Shanghai Composite posted another “up day” on an intraday basis—its 13th consecutive session where the close finished above the open—marking a rare streak and the longest in roughly three decades. Fueled by broad buying, the index held firmly above the 4,000 level and logged its highest close in more than ten years, signaling a noticeable improvement in investor sentiment.

Reports said the Shanghai Composite rose 1.5% to 4,083.67, while the Shenzhen Component gained 1.4% to 14,022.55, reaching a near four-year high.

Trading activity also picked up sharply. Combined turnover in Shanghai and Shenzhen reached around RMB 2.81 trillion, up more than RMB 260 billion from the previous session, marking the strongest volume in roughly three and a half months.

Market breadth was strong: more than 4,100 stocks advanced, and around 150 names hit their daily limit up. Brokerages—often viewed as a bellwether for bull-market momentum—led the rally, with several securities firms surging to limit up. The base-metals sector also stayed active, with some major names setting record highs.

Technology themes remained a key focus. “Brain–computer interface” plays continued to attract capital, with multiple related stocks hitting limit up. Still, not every sector participated: home-related goods and communications equipment stocks moved lower.

On the outlook, some brokerage research notes that the market is currently between major data releases and earnings announcements, shifting attention toward policy expectations and industry trends. One view is that 4,000 could represent a new starting point, potentially setting the stage for a seasonal spring rally.

Economists attribute the rare 13-session streak mainly to two forces: a liquidity backdrop seen as relatively supportive, and heightened expectations of policy easing—such as potential rate cuts, reserve-requirement reductions, or stronger property support measures. They also note that the ongoing tech cycle and risk appetite have helped broaden gains beyond simple valuation recovery.
