Kuai Technology reported on January 11 that, during a recent personal livestream, Lei Jun revisited several key strengths of the Xiaomi YU7—one of the highlights being the vehicle’s air filtration system.

While demonstrating a teardown, Lei revealed that the YU7’s cabin air filter is significantly more capable than an N95 mask. “An N95 mask filters 95% of particulate matter,” he explained. “Ours can filter up to 99.95%.”

Lei added that most YU7 buyers are expected to be families, and that parents—especially those with young children—tend to be particularly concerned about health. Because of that, Xiaomi prioritized family-oriented needs early in the YU7’s design process, taking into account both parents’ expectations and children’s health requirements.

He also noted that Xiaomi has received a “Five-Star Healthy Car” recognition, achieving five-star standards across categories including clean air, health protection, and green mobility.

In response to online comments claiming the YU7 is simply a “taller SU7,” Xiaomi’s Chief Designer Li Tianyuan pushed back on that characterization. He said that when the team initially tried placing SU7 design elements directly onto the YU7 body, the overall look felt mismatched and unbalanced.

“The SU7 is elegant, with softer and more refined curves,” Li explained. “The YU7 needs to feel powerful and robust,” he added, referencing the team’s design sketches to illustrate the difference.
