Lakers Fall 112–124 to Kings as Four Major Concerns Emerge: Ayton Struggles, Role Players Inconsistent, Both Ends Collapse

The Los Angeles Lakers suffered a disappointing 112–124 loss to the Sacramento Kings. Despite leading through the first three quarters and briefly cutting the deficit in the fourth, the Lakers failed to sustain momentum and allowed the Kings to pull away once again. The defeat highlighted four significant issues that the team must urgently address.

First, Deandre Ayton’s performance continues to fall short of expectations. His on-court energy has been lacking, at times even trailing that of Hayes. Defensive rim protection has declined, turnovers off simple catches have become an issue, and his free-throw efficiency remains unreliable. More concerning is his limited involvement in the game flow. Ayton has the physical tools to dominate the paint, but without greater aggression and increased offensive touches, his impact remains muted.

Secondly, the inconsistency of the Lakers’ role players remains a major obstacle. While players such as LaRavia and Smart have shown flashes of strong performances, their form fluctuates dramatically. In this game, LaRavia went just 1-for-7 and struggled defensively, while Smart finished 0-for-5, missing key opportunities in the fourth quarter. Combined with an unstable bench unit, this lack of reliability continues to cap the team’s ceiling.

Defensively, the Lakers experienced a complete breakdown. Perimeter coverage was repeatedly exposed, interior protection was ineffective, and opponents found open looks throughout the night. Both Westbrook and DeRozan found their rhythm, while the Kings shot an exceptional 17-of-26 from beyond the arc—clear evidence of the Lakers’ inability to apply defensive pressure. Alarmingly, there has been little sign of defensive adjustment or improvement.

Finally, the offensive struggles compounded the problem. The Lakers connected on just 8 of 36 three-point attempts. A modest improvement from long range could have altered the outcome, yet LaRavia, Smart, Vanderbilt, Dončić, James, and Knecht all struggled from deep. Unfortunately, poor three-point shooting has become a season-long trend, leaving the Lakers without consistent offensive or defensive intimidation.
