German Chancellor: If US-EU Talks Fail, Germany Will Retaliate Against Tariffs

On May 26, German Chancellor Merz stated that Germany and other EU countries do not want to see the tariff dispute escalate. Merz emphasized that from Germany’s perspective, imposing additional tariffs would harm German interests, and if negotiations between the EU and the US fail, Germany would have no choice but to retaliate against US tariff measures.

“From Germany’s standpoint, a tariff war would only damage our economic interests. While both sides are currently trying to avoid conflict through negotiations, if talks fail, we must be ready to respond,” Merz said.

He added that Germany is preparing for the possibility of failed negotiations and any other scenario to ensure the country and the EU can protect their interests.

Merz also mentioned that US tech companies currently enjoy a favorable tax environment within the EU, but this may not continue. “The EU does not want to escalate the tariff conflict with the US, but both sides need to work together to resolve the trade dispute,” he said.
